Two Christmas shows are coming to the South Bend Civic Theatre to shepherd in a festive holiday season.
The Christmas Schooner is a musical based on the true story of a ship that sailed down Lake Michigan loaded with Christmas trees to bring German immigrants in Chicago great cheer. Director Gary Oesch says, “It’s a story that deeply makes people feel Christmas. There’s joy in a Tannenbaum.”
The story is a simple one, but what gives it that magic feeling are all the details. “Each cast member has to feel that they’re part of a theatre family for this musical to come to life,” says executive director Aaron Nichols. And he knows that Civic productions begin with strangers and creates a tight-knit family through the rehearsal process. The Christmas Schooner opens December 1st in the Wilson Auditorium.
A Nice Family Christmas is a little more adult, and perhaps all too familiar if you have some of “those” family members who make the holidays challenging. Director Megan Chandler knows that her show offers something different. “I want people to laugh,” she says. “Laugh like they’re watching Netflix alone and drinking. Audience members should have at least one snort-laugh!” A Nice Family Christmas had an interesting rehearsal process. A few cast members are new to the stage, and Chandler hopes she took strangers and made them into a believable, dysfunctional family everyone will recognize during the coming holidays. A Nice Family Christmas opens November 30th in the Warner Studio Theatre.
