DOWNTOWN OKTOBERFEST

 Downtown South Bend will be celebrating fall with this Downtown Oktoberfest theme, closing down the 200 block of S. Michigan St. again for physically-distanced seating areas, vendors, German food from Weiss' Gasthaus, a beer garden, a fall photo op, and live music by The Erly.

Over the Edge will be back downtown for its fifth year of raising funds for Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County, and the block party on Michigan Street will be a great spot to watch participants rappel off the Robertson's Building.​

Football Fridays will also be taking place this First Fridays with a free community tailgate on the Gridiron with a concert by Ultrafab, Pumpkin Palooza is back at South Bend Chocolate Cafe, Fiddler's Heath will be celebrating their 19th anniversary with a Shamrock-toberfest, and more! Over the Edge is a fundraiser for Youth Service Bureau in which amazing people sign up to raise $1,000 or more to help homeless youth in our community. Each participant who reaches this goal will have the opportunity to rappel down the side of the Robertson's Building this first Fridays. Click here to donate.

Come out and watch these fearless philanthropists scale down the building. A physically-distanced viewing area will be set up on Michigan Street by Studebaker Plaza with a beer garden provided by Chicory Cafe

DTSB will be repeating the Michigan Street Block Party and closing down the 200 block of S. Michigan Street for physically-distanced dining areas and entertainment once again for the October First Fridays!

Grab some takeout from your favorite downtown eatery and head to the 200 block of S. Michigan St. (between Jefferson and Wayne) where we will have a physically-distanced seating area in the street with beer from Chicory, German food from Weiss' Gasthaus, vendors, Studebaker cars, a concert by The Erly from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., an Over the Edge viewing area, and more! The seating areas will be open to people of all ages, and will be located in the south end of the block.

Tables and chairs will be cleaned by DTSB Ambassadors throughout the event, and hand sanitizer will be available. We will be following CDC Guidelines on mask usage: vaccinated participants will not be required to wear a mask, but mask usage will be recommended for non-vaccinated participants.

Football Fridays

6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The Gridiron

Football Fridays is a FREE family-friendly tailgate party on the Gridiron which takes place the Fridays before each Notre Dame home football game, with live music, a cash bar, yard games, food vendors, and a physically-distanced seating area to enjoy downtown carryout!

Football Fridays is hosted by the Courtyard by Marriott South Bend Downtown, in partnership with Downtown South Bend, Inc. and Visit South Bend Mishawaka.

The public is encouraged to wear their ND apparel, grab carryout from a downtown eatery or from a food vendor (this week's featured food vendor will be Land & Sea Catering - located in the parking lot by the Gridiron), and enjoy it at a special physically-distanced seating area that will be set up on the Gridiron. This Football Fridays event will feature live by Ultrafab from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and a cash bar provided by the Courtyard by Marriott South Bend Downtown.

Pumpkin Palooza at South Bend Chocolate Cafe

5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The first 200 visitors to the South Bend Chocolate Cafe this First Fridays will receive a free pumpkin to carve, with the donation of a non-perishable food donation or $1 to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. Carving tools and table space will be available. 50 small pumpkins will also be available for the younger kids to decorate.

Carved pumpkins can be taken home, or left to be displayed on Michigan Street that evening as luminaries, and will be available to take home after that. Also take advantage of their First Fridays special: 2 for $20 any crunch/pretzel combo. 

DTSB Fall Photo Op

DTSB has set up a Fall Photo Op with hay bales, mums, pumpkins and corn stalks right outside their offices at 217 S. Michigan. The photo area will remain up for the month of October. Take some fun photos and post them using #DTSBFallFun. Special thanks to Matthys Farm Market for helping supply the fall items!

Guided Architectural Walking Tours of Downtown - OCTOBER TOUR FULL

 Enjoy a fun and informative guided walking tour of South Bend landmark buildings, exploring their history and present day use. NOTE - the October tour is now full but we have added a November tour of the West Washington District and space is still available. Use the same reservation link listed below.

The tours cover over twenty historical buildings and more than a half-dozen city blocks in the heart of downtown South Bend. Tours are $5 per person (cash only) with reservations requested for each tour. Reservations can be made online here or by calling Downtown South Bend at 574-282-1110. Tours start at the American Trust Company clock, located at the corner of Washington St. and Michigan St., in front of Cafe Navarre.

Camp Baccchanal: Artists' Mixer 2021

The South Bend Museum of Art  presents an evening focused on celebrating the arts and creating community! Join them for an open art exchange, libations, conversation, and dancing featuring pop-up performances by Ruby Jazayre and the Sisters of the Nile and an immersive fiber performance by Tara Lisciandro and special furry guest. Suggested age, 18+

 

Bring 1-3 artworks to trade (they can be print editions, multiples, or originals). When you arrive, pins and binder clips will be available to tack your work up on a designated wall. There will also be surfaces available to display 3D works. Before you leave, select a work or works to take home with you! Select one for each of the works you brought (if you brought 3, select 3!) Be sure to sign your artwork(s) so the lucky person who selects it at the end of the night will know who created it!

First Fridays Latin Dance

Howard Park

South Bend Latin Dance will be hosting an outdoor Latin Dance this First Fridays at the Howard Park ice rink area. They will be slowing it down this time, featuring feature more bachata/kizomba and salsa romantic so they can groove more easily on the concrete.

Cost is $5. A Beginners' lesson will take place at 7:30 p.m. with open dancing to follow. All ages, all levels - no partner or dance experience required. 

Oktoberfest Celebration with DJ Chuck Fry at Ironhand

Celebrate Oktoberfest, Ironhand style! They will be celebrating all things German with Upland's Oktoberfest, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. DJ Chuck Fry will be playing some funky house music (even some German tunes!)  Lederhosen encouraged!

The IMPower Center and South Bend Community Initiatives will be featuring the "Alive & Free" Grantees in Key Bank Plaza. The South Bend Alive grant program is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to reduce incidents of gun violence in the community and provide constructive initiatives for South Bend’s young people. The program, managed by the Office of Community Initiatives, focuses on funding community-based initiatives that provide mentorship for young people, help connect youth with employment training and opportunities, and conduct community outreach and youth engagement activities.
