The “First Friday” South Bend Opening will be an exciting exhibit of paintings by featured artists, husband and wife Norman and Dixie Bradley of Fort Wayne, Indiana. New Galleries’ thirteen Gallery Artists’ work continues to be exhibited as well.
Norman Bradley is Professor Emeritus of Indiana University-Purdue University where he taught painting, design, and art history, including 19th Century, 20th Century, and pre-Columbian art history of ancient Mesoamerica. Retiring in 1999, Norman continues to paint.
Norman Bradley’s life has been closely tied to Latin America, primarily Mexico, its culture, its people, and its history. One of the high points of his life was having gone to Mexico to attend college where he attended the University of the Americas and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1964.
The major part of Norman’s work has been non-representational paintings. Although Norman cares little for the term “abstract”, as the word has become a popular cliché, he believes that all paintings are abstractions.
Bradley’s paintings are unabashedly expressionist in nature and feeling. In spite of the emotion in my work and its directness, I am, and always have been, very much interested in the art of painting. For Bradley, painting has always been a great deal like music.
Bradley loves paint and works very directly with it. His paintings are as much destruction as creation as they go through various stages of development, wiping out, scraping away, overpainting, etc. They evolve. Decisions are made. In the end, the work must have spirit, unity, and expression.

Dixie Landis Bradley, Norman Bradley’s wife, is jointly exhibiting her paintings in their February 2010 Exhibit at New Galleries.
Dixie works in many media, among them, photography, monoprints, oils and mixed media. Dixie’s art education includes the Fort Wayne Art Institute, School of Fine Arts, and Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) with some specialized photographic education at the Winona School of Professional Photography in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Dixie has participated in a number of group exhibits, as well as dual exhibits with her husband, Norman Bradley, and a number of individual exhibits in the Fort Wayne, IN area.
Dixie’s work is inspired by nature’s vibrant colors and dynamic forms. Her paintings are impressionistic renditions of flowers and landscapes or abstract swirls of color that draw you into their riotous dance. See samples of Dixie’s work on her website: http://mysite.verizon.net/dixielb/ .
