City of South Bend Welcomes New College Students

August 20, 2012 — Mayor Pete Buttigieg will jumpstart the new academic year with a
“Welcome to the City of South Bend” ceremony on Monday, August 20. The ceremony will take place on the Gridiron at the College Football Hall of Fame located at 111 South Saint Joseph Street in downtown South Bend. The ceremony, which starts at 6:00 p.m., will welcome new students attending local colleges and universities.

“South Bend has a lot to offer in entertainment, arts, and dining for students coming to the area for college and graduate studies,” Buttigieg said. “We want them to feel at home in our city and explore all that it has to offer.”

The welcoming ceremony will be part of a Student Bus Tour that has become a popular annual event. Colleges and universities participating include: Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, Indiana University South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. The colleges and universities invite freshmen, transfer, and graduate students to board TRANSPO buses to tour some of the attractions in South Bend. The Student Bus Tour exposes students to what the city has to offer and provides an opportunity for students to explore the rich history of the city.

“We are excited to participate in this year’s Student Bus Tour,” Jackie Rucker, the Associate Director for Community Relations at University of Notre Dame, said. “This is not only an exciting event for the city, but the students really enjoy learning about the city and the tour.”

Buses will depart from each of the participating college and university campuses at 5:00
p.m.
