Erasmus Bookstore - A Downtown Gem

June 2, 2008 — “Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself.”  Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus

If you’re a lover of books, and delight in being in the midst of those who collect, preserve and appreciate the study of the written word, then Erasmus Books is a true source of enlightenment.  Located at 1027 E. Wayne, in a historic 1912 Prairie Style house designed by famed South Bend architect Roy Shambleau. Beyond the home’s unique character and its history is Erasmus Books, which in itself is a rare find.  After purchasing an existing collection of used books in 1980, school teacher Philip Schatz and Notre Dame faculty member William Storey opened Erasmus Books. The bookstore contains a diverse collection of used books with varied subjects and titles for readers of all ages.

“The design of this house is perfect for us and serves as both home and bookstore,” said Schatz.  The open concept of the home’s floor plan lends itself well to the numerous bookshelves and titles that now line its walls. Erasmus Books consists of two levels; a main floor featuring literary works, drama, Shakespeare, poetry, and biographies as well as sections on Indiana history, philosophy and religion. Also on the main floor is a popular spot for young readers and their parents, the “Kid’s Nook”.  The lower level holds a plethora of non-fictional choices; history, nature, the sciences, cooking, arts & crafts as well as a large assortment of fictional works in paperback.

Schatz reflected on the challenges of finding a particular used book before the internet, the decision to become an owner of a used bookstore, and the origin of the store’s name.  “Erasmus was famous for rediscovering the great literary classics,” explained Schatz. Hence the bookstore’s name was chosen.

Schatz has been active in downtown South Bend for many years; from the days of Center City Associates, to today where he is engaged in his neighborhood revitalization plan.  “I’ve seen the gradual transition of the downtown, the efforts taken to make it an entertainment destination, and now the success of those efforts,” said Schatz.  Like downtown, Schatz is also seeing the success of his and Storey’s efforts to provide a book experience for visitors, students and locals.  Erasmus Books is open Tuesday – Sunday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.
